In 9ine ball, why must 3 balls hit the rail in the break?

  1. Since 9-ball is a game that uses an open break shot, the idea is that if three balls contact a cushion, it implies that the rack will have been hit hard enough to spread the balls adequately and not leave a big cluster by the foot spot.  It's the exact opposite strategy than in straight pool, where you don't want to break up the cluster on the opening break shot.  It just keeps things moving along.  M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.
