I was planning to get my learners before my 15th birthday so then when I turn 16 i could get my actual license. But my friend said you need to have your learners for 2 years.

So how long do you actually need it?

  1. The Alberta Traffic Safety Act requires individuals to carry a Class 7 (Learners) for no less than ONE year prior to applying for and obtaining a Class 5 Operator's Licence.

Once ONE year has elapsed, you are free to take the written exam and road test, and upon successful completion of this your licence will be upgraded to an Class 5GDL (Graduated Drivers Licence)

  2. Stage 1 learner, Class 7, must be held for 1 year, as per the Alberta driver handbook.

Stage 2 probationary Class 5, must be 16.  That is the stage you must hold for 2 years after passing the road test.
