Are those who live in other countries called African-Whatever too? Let's say English; is a black person in England called African-English or is America the only country to allow this PC nonsense?

  1. that's funny.  you need to ask why there is a need to classify us or be 'pc' as you put it.  of course you know at one point after being dragged here against our wills we were called n i g g e r s and at times mongrels. and those were the more acceptable terms.  then somehow it evolved negroes. then colored.  there were a few in between.  sometime after that the 'pc' term was black.  for now you people choose to call us african american-atleast in public.  tell me sir,  being that you believe its all nonsense, which one would you prefer to call us?  I bet I already know...

  2. The problem with the African-American label as it is being used in the USA is that it is inaccurate. All africans are not black. John Kerry's wife described herself as african-american . She was born in Africa and later became an American citizen .

The  first hyphenated term that blacks used was Afro-American and perhaps that could be reserved for blacks and then African-American could be used for Africans of other races. that could eliminate the confusion .

also ,Many black Americans are not of African descent and resent  being placed in that category just because of color.

I can't think of any practical way to accurately identify every  hyphenated American . I think it would become too cumbersome .

Perhaps the old system of every citizen being called American regardless of race ,color creed or ancestry was the best after all..

  3. Most black people in England parents or grandparents emigrated. And so are called by their nationalities: Ghanaian, Jamaican, Nigerian, Bajan etc. And plus they keep their culture and usually take trips back with the younger vacation generation so they remember their roots.

As mindcandy said, we have nationality identification. Its oo far gone for African Americans to trace their roots to the exact.

  4. Complain about the Italian Americans, Irish American, etc. The Africans in Europe usually have cultural identification. They actually come from a country in Africa. Speak the language. Know the history of the country in Africa which they are from. Get a clue would you. You people make a point of being ignorant. Its really incredible. When I say "you people" I am referring to white american.

  5. i don't get it either.

i'm white but i don't call myself caucasian american. it seems to be that identifying yourself like that would have a divisive effect.

  6. everything mindcandy said is correct. Finally someone had since. Some white constantly complain about everything African Americans do. You call us monkeys, *******, coloreds, black. Escuse us for trying to identify ourselves with something! It just seems that some whites will always find something to be pissed at blacks about.  I love names like Italian Americans and so on. It destinguishes us but keeps us together as Americans. That's the beauty of America. Its the worlds different races trying to live together. I love our differences!! I watch different ethnic people and just smile and get happy about living here in America.

  7. Whatever.  I'm just black, yo.

  8. I don't know.  All I can see is that not all "African Americans" are from Africa.  Some are from Jamaica, Barbados, and some latinos are black, but they are not African.  I'm in Canada and here you are what you are, whether you are from Africa orJamaica, if you're black, you're BLACK, it's not an issue here. I could be wrong, but I don't think we have to many labels in Canada, and I don't mean that in any way disrespectful to the U.S.A.  I know a lot of Americans (be they black or white), have said that we (in Canada) are so much more tolerant to certain situations, than in the States.  As I said, I mean no disrespect!
