I see Old Blue, True Blue etc. In particular I love the John Williamson song True Blue (sang at Steve Irwin's Memorial) and find it fascinating....

  1. We have many meanings for the word blue, but I really don't think the word blue dominates our culture.

Here are some meanings but I'm sure I've missed a couple.

To have a blue = to have a fight or argument.

To be True Blue = to be real Aussie who loves their family, mates (friends) and country.

Blue - the colour blue. Sky blue, navy blue etc.

"Blue" or"Bluey" - a nickname for a person with red hair.

To make a blue - to make a mistake.

A bluey -  a blue cattle dog or blue heeler. An Australian cattle dog breed that has blue-grey markings on a creamy-white coat.

Blue is also a common name for blue cattle dogs.

So, "Old Blue" maybe talking about an old dog of that name.

Other than that I've never heard the term Old Blue.

We also have the Blue Mountains, the blue gum (a type of eucalyptus tree) and the blue tongue lizard.

  2. Blue means blue...as in the colour.  I wouldn't call it a dominant thing though.

True Blue is to be loyal or patriotic and was not just an Australian term as it originated in England.

Going on from zoltan's theme...blue-ringed octopus!

  3. you forgot the <blue bottles> and the <blue poles>.....elizabeth/..he he he he
