In BODIES: The Exhibition, how do they cut the bodies vertically?

I imagined one of those giant rolling razorblade-saw things, like in action movies where the guy is strapped to a conveyor belt that is slowly heading toward the spinning blade...

Also, are the eyeballs real or fake? If they're real that makes it even creepier than it was...=P

  1. Perhaps your idea isn't so far off.

I would guess that to saw a body right down the middle they use a fast, thin band saw.  For the more ornate displays, like where there is an intact liver on an otherwise bisected body, they probably use large surgical instruments to slice the organs and bone saws (small electric circular saws) to cut the bones.

I would guess that the eyes are real fakes.

By that I mean that the real eyes have been replaced by the same glass eyes that are used as prosthetics when people lose their eyes.  Real human eyes would probably collapse during preservation, and the preservatives would generally turn the cornea (the clear part at the front of your eye) cloudy or opaque, so I expect that these are replaced by glass eyes.
