If "severe pain" is the actual definition and someone bluffs "dull pain"- are they the same thing (or similar enough), or not at all, because despite being in a similar category, they have 2 very different meanings at almost opposite ends of the spectrum???

  1. Well, I think it depends on the overall mentality of the players involved. If they are are all very young and generally insecure, then it might be a kind gesture to give them partial credit. Sometimes children have fragile egos

However, if they are adults, let's say of average intelligence, it would be an insult to said intelligence to even suggest that a severe pain is by definition, the same as a dull pain.

...I would not want my physician thinking it is about the same in meaning.

...when ordering in a restaurant, If I ask for a well done steak and it comes out rare, I would not think the waiter could excuse himself by saying "well, at least it IS a steak- I coulda' brought out fish....

Since it is (by definition), a definition that one is supposed to be producing, and the two have almost opposite meanings and CANNOT be used interchangeably, then they absolutely cannot be counted as correct. I am surprised that anyone would think otherwise, unless as I mentioned, those involved were very young and needed over all encouragement.

  2. Even though the definition and the bluff both contain the word "pain", I would agree with your saying that they have 2 very different meanings. Dull and severe mean 2 totally different things; compare bumping your toe vs. amputation-See what I mean? Dull vs severe.

I would not count this a correct answer and give the points for a correct guess. Sorry, it is just too opposite from my perspective.

(btw...this is a GREAT game to play!! Fun stuff!)

Good luck and hopefully it all worked out with whatever decision you came up with while playing the game!

    Have fun!!

    :-)

  3. Actually door means "pain" where the dull or severe come is the adjective prior.

  4. i would give it to him if no one else used "pain" in there answer. that's pretty darn close, especially for balderdash!

  5. They aren't the same because dull and severe are almost the exact opposite. I still think you should move half of what you would normally move though because you were real close.

    I LOVE that game!

  6. I think they were close enough. but each member of the game is supposed to vote on it

  7. Even though the definition isn't correct, since severe and dull are clearly not the same, I would try to give some credit for the answer, since he was on the right track.  I believe in Balderdash you can decide as a group what can be accepted so you have a little leeway.

  8. I would say that is certainly close enough... considering all the ridiculous things one can put down, I don't see how you shouldn't be awarded points for the rules that states "any definitions exactly or close to that of the real one merrits (I think) three points"

  9. can you get a half of a point?

My vote is that they are not the same.  If you can consider these the same then "mild pain" and "severe pain"  would be the same thing and that's obviously not true.
