In Barcelona,wonder where to go nearby for the wknd/four days. Fun hip,with youth hostals-not 2 far by train?

ASAP--going in the morning...small towns? Beach or mountain?

From Barcelona you should head north. If you want beaches the easiest thing to do is head first by train to Girona or Figueres then get a bus to the Costa Brava. Depending on what you want head for Lloret de Mar or Platja d'Aro (big, loud with lots of tourits and bars) from Girona, or Cadaqués or L'Escala (which are smaller but can be busy in summer) from Figueres. From L'Escala walk 15 mins down the beach to Sant Martí d'Empúries.

For mountains take the train to Ripoll at the foot of the Pyrenees and then get the bus (10-15 mins) to Ribes de Freser and the Vall de Núria. There's loads of hostals here.

As for cool little towns, Girona's very nice, and from there you could try Banyoles which is right next to a big lake. Below you have the Costa Brava site (which includes the Pyrenees), the renfe train timetable site and the email of the Girona Youth Hostal.

You need to go to Stiges.  Its fabulous and only about 20/30 minutes from Barcelona.  It has a wonderful beach and it's very hip without being pretentious.  Seriously Go!!
