In Baseball, what happens when....

Question

What happens when there is a pop fly in the outfield, the fielder catches it and-thinking that there is 3 outs when there really isn't- tosses it into the crowd. There's a man on first.

So, does he get a base? Two bases? or what?

Two base award from base occupied at the time of the throw.

Same as any other throw that goes out of play.

The runner is awarded two bases from the time of the throw. He would get third base. Don't listen to anyone who says the runner gets one base. Anyone who says that doesn't really know the game.

he advances one base [i believe]. in a game one time hideki matsui did a bad throw towards home that went into the crowd. the runner got to the base he was heading to (home)

I believe it is still considered a live ball, meaning the runner can advance as many bases as he wants.

This has happened before! I've seen it. He gets a base.

I believe the player on first would be granted one base.  But it is a rare occurrence so I am not sure.

It happened before, some guy threw the ball into the crowd, but then realized ther wasn't 3 outs so he went into the crowd and took the ball from guy and I forget the rest.
