Question:

In Billiards, if you scratch (the cue ball goes in) after the 8-ball goes in a designated pocket, do you lose?

Anybody have a link that has BRIEF rules of pool (like whether EVERY ball has to be de-pocketed [placed back on the table] after a scratch [cue ball drop])?

  1. WPA world standardized rules:

    3.8 Losing the Rack

    The shooter loses if he

    (a) fouls when pocketing the eight ball;

    (b) pockets the eight ball before his group is cleared;

    (c) pockets the eight ball in an uncalled pocket; or

    (d) drives the eight ball off the table.

    These do not apply to the break shot. (See 3.3 Break Shot.)

    A scratch is considered a foul, so it falls under (a).  It doesn't matter which ball is sunk first.  As far as spotting balls (placing them back on the table):

    3.7 Spotting Balls

    If the eight ball is pocketed or driven off the table on the break, it will be spotted or the balls will be re-racked. (See 3.3 Break Shot and 1.4 Spotting Balls.) No other object ball is ever spotted.

  2. Yes, you lose.  Here are some links to billiards rules:

    The first one is general billiards rules that help you learn the terms (such as what is a foul), the second is rules specifically for 8-ball billiards.

  3. yes.

  4. Yes,

  5. if you scratch on the 8 ball you lose.  Check out the APA site for the rules.

  6. If the cue ball goes in after the 8-ball, you lose.

  7. Yep, I interpret it as a foul, but there's room for lawyers to argue about it, saying that the game ended as soon as the 8 ball hit the pocket. But since the conditions for the scratch happened at the beginning of play per Newtonian mechanics, I'd say the play was a scratch that happened while playing the 8-ball. (And house rules with lots of beer can alter any rules!) Here's an excerpt from the International Rules (see section D:

    15.0 Playing the Eight Ball

    When playing the eight ball:

        a. The eight ball must always be the first ball contacted by the cue ball, and it or any other ball including the cue ball must contact a rail after the initial hit. Failure to do this is a foul and the opponent is awarded cue ball in hand; it is not a loss of game.

        b. Combinations, caroms, kisses, are all legal as long as the eight ball is the first ball contacted by the cue ball.

        c. Pocketing the eight in the wrong pocket is a loss of game.

        d. If a player scratches or jumps the cue ball so that it comes to rest off the playing surface of the table while playing the eight ball, it is a loss of game. Not making a legal hit on the eight ball, but leaving the cue ball on the table, is a Ball in Hand foul- not an automatic loss of game.

    The complete rules are available at: http://www.internationalpooltour.com/Rul...

    It's a very good site...

    Have fun!

  8. yes, you automatically lose.

  9. Yes, you lose.

    In the game of 8 ball, balls are never, ever removed from the pockets for any reason.

    The most correct rules are at bca-pool.com and wpa-pool.com. They are not that long, you can handle reading the whole thing.

  10. Yes you lose if the cueball goes in before or after the eightball does.

  11. Sorry bub, but you lose. If you called the 8-ball as your final shot, make it but scratch the cue ball, give up the stakes, you just lost the worst way.

    If your playing 8 ball the 8 ball is the last ball to be sunk in.

    If you scratch while trying to sink the 8,you lose, yes all the balls get re-racked

    If you just scratch the cue ball at any other time, just the cue ball, comes out, and it's placed behind the break-line. The game continues to end. Just don't sink the 8-ball until the very end.
