It's been well over a year since my permit expired, so I'm wondering if I still need that "6-month permit practice" time period... since I've fulfilled that last time I got my permit.

Yes I'm over 18, but if I go into take my permit test,

Can I take the driver's (written and behind the wheel) on the same day? Or will I have to come back after 6 months again?

  1. My son was allowed to retake the written and the same week was schedualed to do the driving portion of the test.  Having passed, he was given a "temporary" License and his actual one was mailed to us at home.

    Cheers

yes we did have to pay for the license again due to his old one having expired...

  2. I am pretty sure that once you turn 18 you don't need to get your permit.  I think you can just go straight to your license. That being said, I would try to just skip the permit altogether.

I remember my brother couldn't pass the written permit test, so when he turned 18 he took the license one and passed.

Check on the dmv website, it is dmv.ca.gov

Found some info for you here:

  3. No,  Behind-the-Wheel test are given by appointment only.  You cannot schedule an appointment until after you have passed the written test.

It is possible to schedule the appointment as soon as you pass the written test (ie while your at the DMV) however,  the earliest available drive test appointment at your local DMV will be 24 hours to 30 days in the future.

  4. Well, I live in Texas and you at least need to have a permit to practice for 6 months before you get a driver's license

  5. You are 18 years of age or older you can apply for your license right now without anything else...
