Im pretty sure they can have an AR-15 that's semi-auto, but I don't know about an MP-5 (unless u can get one of those semi too). You can always go to a gun store and ask, or call the NRA-ILA hotline...even if they cant answer ur question they can tell u who to call to get an answer.

just as a side note...you could always move to NC and buy as many of whatever you want! except for full autos :-( you could go to to just about any other state in the south though... Ive actually got an AR-15...a DPMS RFA2 PCAR-16 (im 18)

in cal. u can own an AR-15 style weapon. but they dint have magazines wells. they are single shot, or with a small built in mag. it because cal. still has an assault weapons ban and they dont want u to slap a 30 round mag in there.

I'm not sure if you mean on or off duty. Either way, the answer is yes.

A lot of Police Departments use AR-15's in their vehicles as their patrol rifle. Some people may ask why a Police Officer needs an assault rifle, but this all stems from the more violent events that have occurred in the state recently. In most events 10 or even 5 years ago, Police were out gunned by the bad guys' fire power. Police couldn't respond with handguns and shotguns. That's when most Departments went to carrying patrol rifles.

Most SWAT teams use semi-auto/fully auto M4's and MP5s.

Why would you want to have something like that? Most policemen go through an entire career without firing their weapon. Real life on the force is not like the movies there a LOT of paperwork anytime you fire your weapon, even more if you shoot someone, even more if you kill someone. Plus a lot of mental stress.
