Question:

In California, do I do behind-the-wheel drivers training before getting my learner's permit?

I am 16 & completed drivers education online a few months ago. I went to the DMV website & am still confused. Do I need my learner's permit before I do drivers training (the 6 hour required behind-the-wheel training)? Or do I do the 6 hours before getting my learner's permit? Also, I have my pink slip, where do I get my white slip? My parents are just as clueless as I am.

Thanks in advance!

  1. You need the actual permit before you can do the 6 hour because they need the info on your permit to process your information to the state.

  2. Yes! You hap pass the written test to get you learner permit from the DMV/ You cannot really start driver training legally without the permit.

Have you got something to show you completed the course requirement.

I will tell you were you can get all the answer to your question. Cause 6 hours of driving will not really teach you anything. You will not drive on the highways til you have a learner permit. The six hours may be a basic state drive course other than driver ed.

You can take the written test, and even the driving test without going to school. If you are going to go though the driver ed course. Then you can wait. Cause when you pass. You will be tested and get your permit. You can show the internet course you took. If it a credit course. Then part of your driver ed will be done. Perhap they will test you for you permit. Then give you basic 6 hours of basic driving training. So you can move to the real driving on the street.

I would check with driver ed first and the the DMV. Then the driver ed.

  3. I think you need the permit before you can actually drive. After you take the written test, then you start the behind-the-wheel training.

  4. You get the permit BEFORE you start behind the wheel training.
