  1. Well it all depends on how many tried it takes you to pass the written test to get your permit.  After that, the DMV should give you specific requirements as far as what you have to accomplish while driving with your permit before you're eligible to take your behind the wheel test for your actual license.  Things have changed a lot since I went through the process but for some reason I think that time-wise you're looking at 6 months with your permit.  double check with the DMV or on their website though.  Then it just depends on whether you pass your behind the wheel test on the first try or not.

  2. Just a few minutes if you have an appt. and pass everything.

  3. do you really want to drive in crowded cali??  add to the smog problem?  save the planet....oh wait im in construction its pave the planet. :)  i dont know the answer...but do you really want to jump into driving?  fork over money for a car and insurance and all.

  4. But know that even if you have an appointment, you'll likely be doing some waiting (although you'll get to the counter quicker than people who don't have an appointment).

DMVs, if you have never been to one, are very crowded, almost all times to day. The last time I had to go (to get a new license), I did have an appointment, but I still had to get in the line, which was going out the door, just to get to the counter to let them know I was there.

At that point, I sat down, and since I had an appointment, my name was put up near the top of the list.

When you first get a license, I believe you have to take the vision test, and maybe even the written test, but I'm not sure.

After that, you'll get a letter or other sign for you car to show where you are on the driving test list. You go out to the parking lot and wait, putting the letter on your car. Mine took quite a long time. I had to wait seemingly forever for a guy to get his motorcycle test.

The test itself was very short and easy. I then had to go back in and get my license picture taken and my fingerprint.

I think overall, it took nearly a couple hours. Maybe more.

It really all depends on how busy the DMV is that day/time you go.

So, it could help if you get there a little early.
