In Chess, why can't the opposing player choose not to hit the clock?

  2. Your opponent is free to not hit his clock, but if his time runs out he loses.  

    Another interesting fact:  it is against the rules for a spectator to point out to a player that he forgot to hit his clock.

  3. When you hit the clock, the other player's clock starts automatically.  If an opponent never hits the clock, their opponent is essentially free to sit still until the other person's time runs out, resulting in a loss.
