In chess do you need to say check if you are planning to kill any piece except the king?

  1. No.  You only say "check" if the king is in a position to be captured on the next move.

    You say "check mate" when the king will be captured on the next move because all possible moves will still result in capture.

  3. No, you never need to verbally indicate either check or checkmate....the other player should already know.

    People playing for fun tend to of course, but you don't have to.
