  1. My mom and I take turns.

Lunch is around 1:30pm, when the kids get home from school and dinner, around 6:30 - 7:00pm.

We usually prepare a few dishes, consisting of meat, vegetable, eggs/tofu & soup, served with rice.

  2. the mom always prepares it =)

  3. Well i'm part chinese and part indian, my mom makes the food and we eat late.  My mom is 1/2 chinese.

  4. Usually the womenfolk cook: grandma, mother, daughter, daughter-in-law. In the old days, wealthier families also had lots of maids who would also cook. The lazy chavinistic males simply lounged about waiting for dinner! But in the modern Chinese household, many men also do the cooking & are good at it too. In the past when refrigeration was unknown, an essential part of food preparation was also buying of fresh food daily, especially very perishable meats & fish.

Mealtimes vary. Those farmers in rural places would eat breakfast very early, and usually a hearty meal with rice & dishes for energy. City folk pretty much have mealtimes similar to Westerners. Dinner is about early evening, 6-7 pm and traditionally all members of the family are to return home on time to eat together. This communal eating is a big part of Chinese culture. Often, those who feel a bit peckish will have a light supper at night, sometimes a dessert like the Cantonese 'tong sui' or sweet dessert soup.

As for the food itself it varies greatly, largely based on region & availability. The northern part of China eats wheat as the staple, hence the popularity of wheat flour noodles & Chinese bread. Towards the south the staple is rice, so steamed rice, rice porridge & rice flour noodles are the stomach fillers. Usually, a typical dinner consists of a few stir-fried or steamed dishes & a soup. Authentic Chinese food is light & refreshing, you don't feel you've lead weights in your stomach that are threatening you with constipation!

Those in the coastal regions can feast on fresh seafood. In the past, many living in inland regions may never have tasted fresh seafood all their lives, as it was impossible to keep seafood alive through long distances. Thus dried & salted seafood was the norm, those living near rivers could enjoy freshwater fish like carp, loaches & eels though some had a muddy taste. For meat, chicken & pork were the most commonly consumed. But note that the poor often could only enjoy meat once a year during the Chinese Lunar New Year. For veggies, other than the green leafy Chinese veggies & beansprouts, tubers & roots like sweet potato, tapioca and yam or taro were used to supplement their diet.
