  1. Its the same story with the increasing addiction to ANY drug, including this particular fictionalized one.


  2. For one thing, Hyde cannot become Jekyll any more; he has to remain Hyde. Moreover, after having abstained from being Hyde for a while and after asseverating that he will have nothing more to do with Hyde, Jekyll finds not that he has conquered his desire to be Hyde, but only that he has repressed it. In other words he has not surmounted his impulse; the impulse has held on.

    Finally, Hyde/Jekyll does himself in. That is an ultimate in evil, an admission that Jekyll has been vanquished. All his previous murders (Carew, the girl, etc.) have been acts of suicide.
