I have a feat that I no longer want and my DM won't let me change it. Is there an in game way to change out my feats? Like the wish spell or something less expensive?

  1. Actually if your DM allows the use of psionics (most don't though so it's a long shot) you can find a Psion that can use the Psychic Reformation power on you. here's a link to the SRD entry for it. http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers...

costs some XP on your part and on the part of the Psion but it could be worth it.

However; the DM has final say on what is possible in his game as he is the arbitrator of any rules. If he's saying no to letting you switch out the feat simply because it's not in the rules, show him the psionic ability and see if he goes for it then.

But bear in mind he may have other reasons for not allowing it and you may have to either bide by his ruling, leave the game, or talk someone else into taking over as DM.

  2. With the DMG2 (IIRC - might've been the PHB2) in 3.5E, WotC added the concept of retraining (which they continued into 4E.) With those rules, feats, skills and even (to a degree) class abilities can be retrained during the level-up process.

  3. Rule # 1. of D&D:  The DM has the final say his/her word is law!

If you have not used the feat in the game yet some DM's may be willing to let you trade it out but once it has been used it is hard to argue switching it as it has become part of who you (as your) are.

I would suggest trying to find a way to make the feat work for you as it appears you are stuck with it.

    Happy gaming!

  4. First off which edition are you playing? If its 4th then just wait until you hit a level and retrain.  If they're refusing you that right then, there's nothing nice I can say. You're learning a new system and mistakes will be made, forgiveness should applied.

If its 3.5 or earlier, my first question would be is it a prerequisite for another feat. If so, you need to keep it so you can keep using the better version.  If not, are you a new player to system? As before forgiveness should be used.

I would discuss with it with him as to why he's doing that. Technically there are retraining rules in the PHB 2 for 3.5, they are only optional though. There is no reason why training can't be allowed to lapse and new things learned instead, would be my rule but some people are sticklers for rules. Not sure why, but go figure.

Another answer said that the DM controls the game, this is incorrect. The DM is the rules judge and storyteller.  DnD is a group game, all of you control the game together. If the other players are on your side he should at least be willing to listen. You are not normal people, you are heroes, and as such have a bit more leeway then NPCs have.

You simply might be stuck, you could always just change it anyways and deal with those repercussions. If this is but one of several problems with them it might be time to ask him to step down, and let someone else run. Might be time to find a new group. Anyways wish you luck with problem.

  5. If your DM won't let you change it then there is not any way to do it. The DM controls the game and can make any additional rules that he wants.

  6. Technically no, but you could propose a quest to change your Feat that goes along with the 3.5 supplement notion of roleplaying obtaining your feats.  It's difficult as dropping a Feat would be akin to a champion pole vaulter wanting to also be a champion swimmer.  It's not easy to pick up nor forget special abilities like Feats.  Still, check with your DM about the quest, perhaps a divine test or a guild challenge.
