  1. Those TVs will need BATTERY POWERED converter boxes IF they make them, and I doubt they will....

Of course you can buy an inverter that uses a 12 battery and that will drive  any converter out there right now....you can get them from Office Depot or any store for computers...

  2. (This answer assumes you are located in the US)

Any analog only TV, including small battery powered ones, will need to converter box to keep receiving over the air broadcasts after 2/17/09. All converters need electrical power.

There have only been a couple of battery powered TVs with digital tuners on the market so far but they are rather expensive and don't have very good reviews.

If your old portable has a jack for an external antenna or A/V cables, you can certainly hook a converter up to it.

Some models of the converters use an external DC power source, so rigging up a battery pack to power it wouldn't be difficult. Or if there's a car handy you could also use a small inverter to power the converter.

By the time you add up the converter, battery pack, and possibly an antenna to your portable, it might not be all that portable for backpacking purposes, but you could plan ahead for power outages and RV usage.
