  1. By TER train, as per Rillifanes anwer is perfectly correct.

You'd be better off to rent a car though.

By car it takes about 2 hours. Head south on the A7, (direction:  Marseille). Then take the A47 to Givors - Saint Etienne - Clermont Ferrand.

Then take the N88 direction: Le Puy-en-Velay

pass near Saint-Etienne then via Le Pertuis

(still on N88)  and via Chadrac.

Left always on N88 to  Le Puy-en-Velay

  2. A TER train leaves form Gare Perrache at 07h06 that with a couple of tranfers and an autobus ride will get you to Puy in 3hours 32 minutes.

On the way back you need to set out at 18h23 from Le Puy and arrive back in Lyon at 22h08.

Seems like a lot of traveling for a day trip.

  3. I'd  think about making this one an overnighter, especially if you go train.

You can pull it off fairly well by car if you get an early start. But it'll cost you in gas for sure.
