  1. They do not eat toast there .

  2. Some people will say that French toast isn't French but it is...

    French toast is actually from Alsace, called "pain perdu" so technically it is a French dish. It means "lost bread" which refers to the stale bread left over, probably a translation from Alsatian.

    My Alsatian mother-in-law was quite shocked to see me making such a typical dish from her region. The maple syrup was a little weird for her though. She said it was served simply with sugar and considered poor people's food. The maple syrup is a North American twist on this dish.

    The British call it "eggy bread".

    This is very popular in Jewish communities because the challah bread used on Friday night for Shabbat would be pretty nasty by Sunday morning. Religious people can't cook on Saturday so it's a traditional Sunday morning treat with Jewish Communities in both Alsace in N. America.

    Here's more info but there's a mistake in this article. The fact this is an Alsatian dish would explain why some people thought it was German. When most Alsatians immigrated to America, Alsace was under German rule and although the Alsatian culture and language are closer to German, they always considered themselves proud Frenchmen, even with control bouncing back and forth and their Germanic names, language and habits;

    One restaurant chain in France serves it as a dessert, claiming it to be "American". This was the only time I've seen it served in France.

    You can get normal toast, "pain grillé" or "grilled bread" in most restaurants that serve breakfast (especially in big hotels). They usually use "pain de mie" which is sliced square bread that Americans are more used to for this, not the French baguettes which tend to get stuck in those machines and are fiddly to butter. In buffets, they have one of those industrial toasters for you to do it yourself.

    Whether you eat your bread grilled, French, eggy, toasted or lost, bonne apetite!

  3. They ask for pain grillé, toasted bread.

    French bread (I think that's what you mean by French toast) is a sweet, called pain perdu (lost bread) and is usually served for desert.

  4. If you are in France do not eat Am. toast. Americans use to eat toast because their US bread is not eatable, not tasty.

    Good french bread is delicious, so don't burn it for a toast

  5. we eat toast only when the bread is too old

    because we have the best bread in the world

    france rule the cook

  6. no, in france we just say "toast"

  7. They ask for "pain perdu," its original name.  Only English-speaking countries call it French toast.
