It is/was to be flooded due to the building of the three gorges dam that is build on the Yangtze river.

Its called the 3 Gorges Dam and its been built.  It flooded hundreds of villages whose occupants were forced to move to higher ground.  Its probably one of the worlds greatest environmental disasters.

China is constantly being bashed for pollution from coal fueled industry and when they seek alternatives they are bashed for doing that too.

How many dams in NA have flooded agricultural areas and forced farmers and other people out of their homes with NO compensation?

To us its a tourist spot, that we wish to visit and look at and admire, to the Chinese its hydro power and an effort to move away from their dependency on coal. Get over it
