Recently, there is an article in Japan says that among all the developed countries, Japanese youth are the least independent. The reason why I asked is because most Japanese parents support their children's college tuition fees. I have heard that American high school students work part-time jobs to support themselves to go to college.

I wonder if the article is accurate. I would like to ask people from all over the world. Do your parents pay college fees for you ?

Are you going to quit school if your parents don't pay for you?

  1. I don't know if it is "least independent" but probably it is true. All you've heard about tuition fees are true in Japan (of course with some exception).

Most of the Japanese college student have part time jobs but you can't pay all the tuition fees and living costs from it especially if it is a private school. Public university/college are much cheaper but that means students have to pass very very difficult entrance exam.

    example (private university)

    tuition fee 1,000,000

    living cost 1,200,000 (tokyo, 1year)

    deposit of 3 months' rent 60,000 x 3 = 180,000 (tokyo, example)

    etc

    = about 2,400,000 for a year

    x 4 year

    = roughly 10,000,000 yen !

Salary is decreasing and fees/living cost is increasing. In addition, most of the high schools in Japan do not allow part time job so it is almost impossible to prepare for these costs. It's not so easy to be fully independent.

  2. Working has nothing to do with being independent, in fact i would argue that parents supporting *your* decisions in life would make you more independent, than if you would have to rely on the job which doesn't even pay the minimum wage.
