Question:

In Germany, what is the difference between Abendbrot and Abendessen?

I read that of these two German meals, Abendbrot is the more informal. But is there still a difference - and if so what is it? Is different food served at Abendbrot? Should you wear different clothes? Arrive more punctually? Can any Germans out there help me with this?

  1. The terms are indeed mostly used interchangably, thou "Abendbrot" can have an informal touch as you noted. This is because "Abendbrot" has the word "Brot" (bread) in it, which refers to eating a cold meal consisting of sliced bread with butter and cheese or cold cut - a simple yet common dinner here. "Abendessen" can be either cold or warm food. You shouldn't decide what clothes to wear based merely on the term "Abendbrot" or "Abendessen", and you should arrive punctually in both cases.

  2. Just to add to the commenter above me, as a rule of thumb, Abendbrot is eaten at home; whereas, you go out for dinner, or Abendessen.

Either word is fine, and works to convey the meaning of the evening meal.
