In Illustrator, how do I apply particular effects to an object?

The adobe site said that some effects work for vector images, while others work for bitmaps. Specifically, I've drawn a square, filled it with color, and want to run one of the sketch effects. However, they are not available, so how do I open them?

hi friend,

don't get worried. Select the box which you have and just click the EFFECTS menu, scroll down to the Sketch palette and there it is.....all the sketch effects you need. But after applying the effect the vector drawing becomes raster, a bitmap....the program works so. Try it and let me know if there is further problem.
