My sixteen year old son is in the eleventh class commerce stream. Just like the ‘taare zameen par’ kid he too has writing problems. In his KG classes he used to write b for d and 9 for p .Even now his spelling, while writing, goes awry. His handwriting is not good and he is able to write only 70 percent of the CBSE question paper. He has short attention spans and he says his concentration wavers even during exams. But when I sit with him watching over, he can complete 10 Math sums in one and half hours.

But he has good vocabulary. He talks very good English and very much interested in reading and watching television. He has acted in school annual day English drama and has taken part in interschool English debate and got 4th position. He works hard and secured 66 % in his 10th board exams.

But now his teachers reduce marks for his writing and even in English he gets around 40%.They speak as though he is not interested, but I know how much he wants to score marks, and how much he wants to succeed. As a mother I am perplexed as to how he will get through his 12th board and as to what course he should take further on? Can anybody suggest what can be done here in India?

  1. HI,

What you explained , sounds very much to be a DYSGRAPHIA ( difficulty with writing ).There are different types of dysgraphia ,and all of them are based on different reasons ( mostly it is a brain association problem ; please note I do not use the word Disease). He needs to start a special program to learn to make the language-writing connections and this could be achieved with a really good speech pathologist .Look for one in the hospitals ( especially one with experience with aphasia patients) or at school.Dysgraphia  is a very common problem for bi-lingual children

    Wishing you all the best!

  2. Your son is a visual learner.  Visual learners are the ones labeled with dyslexia and ADD/ADHD.  Visual learners can struggle in all the areas you have described.  There is a program that will help your son use this visual gift to overcome his learning and focusing problems.  In India, learn more by contacting:

  3. i dont agree with shashi karan.

Im a special needs support worker with a degree in Social Work. in England dyslexia is an extremele common thing. tara zameen par was an excellent film but its a shame ppl still, now aware of this issue, choose to look over it.

i think u shud certainly go to the docs and if they dont help then you should enquire and research on special needs assessment. Please dont let it go easy, its very important for children to be assessed. dyslexia isnt a curse, it is so easy to receive additional help and definately shudnt b seen as a taboo.

  4. i think ur son is perfectly alright.when we get to know some thing  new,we start attributing it to the known facts/the new disease.dyslexia is not that common and every child who is not good at studies cant be tagged with this disease.during 12th class the boys gets more deviations other than studies and about the hand writing--it usually gets finer during younger days.once if this does not get good shape then u cant nice hand writing through out ur life
