We speak an array of languages, due to the influx of many different nationalities. Yet we have two national languages, Gaeilge (Irish) and Béarla (English).

Along the west coast and in some areas in the centre of the country there are areas called Gaeltachtaí, where the Irish Language is spoken as the everyday language. Areas include Rath Cairn in Co. Meath, Conemara in Co. Galway and Ring in Co. Waterford. But there are many, many more.

There are about 60,000 people in Ireland who use Gaeilge as their everyday language, yet according to the recent Cencus over 1 million people in the Country are fluent (of líofa as we say in Irish) in the language.

It is a mandatory subject at both Primary and Secondary schools.

there are small rural villages in parts of ireland called gaeiltachts  

where irish is there first language though, during summer students from all over ireland spend time in these , kind of like summer camps, to improve their irish cause you have to do it for you exams in school.

people think theres no point to teaching irish in schools, but its usually young people that think this, when you get older your proud to have your own language.

plus very few people outside of ireland can understand it so you can get away with saying anything when your abroad haha

yeah english is the main language but kids are still taught gaelic irish in school and there is irish translations on all main roadsigns
