In Italy, how do I take the train from Sorrento to Rome, it isn't the national railway found on their website?

Do I have to go outside Sorrento to the town of Potenza? I read that on another Yahoo question, but I would like to know exactly and more details about the location of the train station. Thanks.

Sorrento is an small town and the train station is small. There are trains and buses that link Sorrento to Naples.  From Naples (Napoli Centrale) there are lots of trains to go to Rome.

Potenza is far far away from Sorrento and you don't need to go there if you want to go to Rome.

There are also direct buses from Sorrento (Piazza Tasso) to Rome (Roma Tiburtina).

The train link between Sorrento and Naples is not managed by the "Ferrovie dello Stato" (The Italian Railways), that's why you cannot find the Sorrento trainstation in that website. You have to look for the trains to Rome from Naples.

No. Potenza is way too far away.

In Sorrento, on the Gulf of Napoli, overlooking the city of Naples there is ah historic railway line called "Circumvesuvius".  And of course it goes around Mount Vesuvius.

There you can get a train to the bigger city of Naples, and get your fast train to Rome .   This website is all in Italian, but there is a small map. The Too-To Train (Choo-choo train??)

Don't make confusion guys.

I'm from Naples, so, you have 2 opportunities:

1) take the train (circumvesuviana) from sorrento to naples. once you arrived in naples' station of circumvesuviana, you have to go one floor up and there's naples central station, and there are many trains to rome. (plan the time of the train NAP-ROM before arriving in naples, so that you haven't waiting much at the station)

2)you can take a boat (named traghetto (low) or aliscafo (faster) and you can arrive to mergellina or molo beverello. there you can take a taxi to the station.

you have to know that in mergellina (where you could arrive) there's a station (that isn't the central station) in front of the boats, where you can take a train to rome.

if you arrive in molo beverello you can choose if going to central station or mergellina station.

Mergellina station is safer than central, if you go to central station pay attention to the bags.

Go to either Naples or Salerno and you can get the Eurostar train to Rome.
