In Italy in the late 1800's, would a woman be more likely to give birth at home, or in a hospital?

And would she have a doctor or something like a midwife?

  1. she would have most likely given birth at home, seeing that most of them didn't have the money to pay to go to the hospital and going there in a carriage by horse would of taken a long time.

    A midwife would  have come straight over and have costed less, while having more experience delivering babies than regular doctors at the time.

Mostly at home, especially during this time when the hospitals were a place of infection.  Hospital births didn't become popular until early 20th century, I would think.  Only wealthier families would have the money for a regulary physician.  A midwife would be sent for, and in some cases a male doctor.  I also think it was considered not modest to give birth in a hospital.

  4. At home, probably assisted by a woman that was knowledgeable in midwifery.
