In Japanese is it arigatou or arigatoo?

Question

So I always thought when ever there was a litte dash over the "o" it became "ou"(arigato=arigatou) but i have seen some websites that say it is "oo". which one is correct? and in japanese if words like arigato are spelled ありがとう then why when writing in japanese in english do people put the little dash over the o, instead of writing ou?

oh and one more question! is "j*p" a racist word? or just an abbriviation for someone who is japanese?

Yes, the dash over the o is correct.

Both are correct, but the "ou" version is much easier to understand.

The reason we don't use the dash is because the dash is a phonetic symbol (like in a dictionary) which most people wouldn't understand.

And i'm assuming the word is "j*p" (it comes out as stars...) and yes it's racist. Uncommon, but racist.

I would watch who you call a j*p.  Some Japanese are outspoken and some won't mind getting up and hitting someone. Same goes for Nip, which is short for nipponjin.  I hope that answers that portion.

Arigatou= ありがとう.  

Arigatoo makes no sense because it's not ありがとお.

The dash over the o means the O is a long vowel, simply. Not that there are two O's.  :) Do you understand? the two dots over a vowel mean the vowel is short.  It's just English pronunciation that has nothing to do with romaji.

j*p is racist. The best term to use for the language is JPNS if you're lazy and only Japanese for a person.

"oo" is often used as an alternative to "ō" in transliterating langugaes; they are simply two different ways of marking long "o". Don't pronounce it like "oo" in English.

'arigatou' is correct spelling of 'thank you'.

arigato-, arigatoo, arigato(u)...etc are for casual term and kinda cute as well. *(u) is gonna be small letter and has no stress.

it's arigato.

maybe other people just write o with a dash over it to indicate something about pronounciation. like in dictionaries, right? there's those symbols that allow people to know how to pronounce the word and it also indicates where the pitch should be high or low.
