  1. Neither.

Both cardinal and ordinal numbers start with ZERO!

You use COUNTING numbers - starting with ONE.

If you are doing push-ups, you might want to try using Fibonacci numbers!

  2. Why is a set theory question posted on a Martial Arts forum? Because you added Karate to it?..

Pretty much any counting is done using natural numbers (or counting numbers).

  3. We practice martial arts; not math.

So, we just count. (1, 2, 3, 4,, etc.) Though it might depend on the kata and such, we usually use Japanese.

  4. Ichi, ni, san, s**+.  (One, two, three, four) If you wanted it in Japanese.

  5. Not sure about Karate, but in Tae Kwon Do (Korean) we counted 1-10 sequential (1,2,3,etc.)  then switched to ordinal (first, second, etc.) at the end of a set.

Since 0 is counted in cardinal numbers I don't think it would be used, at least not very often.  I can't think of anything that would need it -kata 0? Repetition 0?

Also cardinal numbers are used to signify a set or a group (in English anyway) - so I'll say that Ordinal numbers are used much more often for counting.
