In Lingerie timed a perfect run to take the Spinster Stakes
The favoured, In Lingerie continued her excellent debut season by landing her third graded stakes race, when she overcame a tough Grade 1, $500,000 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes lineup over a distance of 1 1/8 miles over Keeneland’s synthetic surface.
This was Todd Pletcher’s trainee’s first Grade 1 victory that she achieved by defeating Mystical Star by a convincing margin of 2 ¼ lengths under jockey John Velazquez, who was all praise about the Empire Maker’s 3-year-old filly.
The Spinster Stakes victory couldn’t have come at a better time for, In Lingerie, especially when Todd Pletcher is eyeing a start for his star filly in the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic at Santa Anita Park on 2 November, 2012.
She had a perfect trip," said Velazquez, who guided In Lingerie to a two-length win. "She broke really well, so we got into a nice position. I was a little worried because the horses in front of me, I was expecting they were going to come back to me. But actually, they lasted a little longer than I expected, which did help me out a little bit. Once I got (her) out at the sixteenth pole and she was in the clear, she responded right away. I'm very proud of her."
Out of Storm Cat’s mare Cat Chat, In Lingerie broke swiftly, but settled in fourth while keeping a close eye on the 31 to 1 longshot, Juanita, who broke away to carve pedestrian fractions in the 1 1/8 mile event.
Though, she made her bid in front by splitting the field, and then was able to keep the rallying Mystical Star at bay, and pulled away to post her first Grade 1 victory, with the final time of 1 minute and 49.42 seconds.
In Lingerie, started her career this season in January, but was introduced graded stakes company in March, when she responded to the change and downed the Grade 3 Bourbonette Oaks, which followed up by another victory in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan.
Never finished worse than third in seven career starts, In Lingerie finished third in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks and second in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes.
