  1. A shell script is essentially a file that contains a list of commands that you would give at the command prompt (shell). You make the file executable, then you can run it from the command line or as a cron job. Shell scripting is useful for server maintenance.

    If you have used Microsoft PC's, it is similar to a bat file, only there are a lot more commands available.
