Like if I directly quote the author by saying, "Simpson writes, 'He was the most...' " do I put a parenthesis after the quotation and cite the page # ??

  1. oh... yes.

    e.g Simpson says "............" (Simpson 11)

  2. Yes!  It's a good thing to introduce the author and the work before the quotation.  For example: In John Steinbeck's "Travels with Charlie" (that should be in italics), he writes "having a companion fixes you in time" (137).  Don't repeat the author's name or the work you've quoted.  If you quote again from the same work, use the last name and the page number, like (Steinbeck 137).
