Hey, i just wanna know for example if i attack a 1/1 creature with a 1/1 creature with wither, it would reduce it to a 0/0 does that creature then die or is it just useless fodder for shoving in the way of other creatures? any info would be great thanks!

  1. Any creature with a zero toughness will go to the graveyard inmediatly as a state-based effect. In plain english, if any creature has toughness zero (4/0, X/0, etc) it will be sent to th graveyard.

In your example when the 1/1 gets a -1/-1 counter, it will become a 0/0, and sent to the graveyard inmeadiatly.

  2. yes as soon as a creatures tuffness = 0 its destroyed.

  3. Yeah it dies. Wither isn't really any different from dealing normal damage. It's only that it's -1/-1 counters which of course stay forever. And a creature with 0 toughness goes to the graveyard as a result of a state based effect. Unless it's indestructible. But that can be worked around too with cards like sudden death and others of the like. Hope this helped!

  4. Alex is partially right.

whither is great if you are playing against a stompy deck (huge creatures).  Though they will destroy your creatures when they attack they will slowly become weaker thereby letting you kill them off too.  The -1/-1 counters stay on until the creature goes away (death, bounce, etc).

Once a creature goes to 0 toughness, it is automatically put into the graveyard.  You cannot play a spell or ability fast enough to stop it from dying.  Though you can respond to the damage being dealt, once the damage resolves, it dies as a state-based effect.  Even indestructible cannot evade this.  No matter how strong a creature is, once it's toughness is 0, it dies.

Also, in your example, they both will die.  The withering 1/1 will die because it was dealt 1 damage to kill it.  The other 1/1 will die because the -1/-1 counter will make it a 0/0 and therefore die as a SBE.  Now, if you have a 1/1 with whither and attack and they block with a 2/2, your 1-1 will die but the 2/2 will become 1/1 because it will gain a -1/-1 counter.  Note, Shadowmoor does have cards that remove the counters from creatures.
