  1. The bases-loaded intentional walk of Josh Hamilton on Sunday night was only the sixth-known instance in baseball history, according to the Society for American Baseball Research.

Hamilton became the first American League player since 1901 receive the free pass with the bases full when Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon made the decision in the ninth inning and the Rays leading 7-3.

Barry Bonds was the last player, in 1998, against Arizona. The manager who made that decision? Former Rangers skipper Buck Showalter.

Maddon indicated his decision Monday by waving four fingers at catcher Dioneer Navarro, and Hamilton didn’t trust what he was seeing.

"I just didn’t quite believe it," Hamilton said. "He [Navarro] said, 'Josh, we’re going to walk you.’ I said, 'Really?’ "

  2. Yes there has, but why would you? You are allowing a run to score, which doesn't really help your team unless you are 100% sure the next batter will hit a home run, which would result in Grand Slam.

  3. Yes. It happened was on August 17th, 2008. Rays at Rangers. Rays were ahead 7-3. Bases loaded. Intentional walk to Hamilton. 7-4. The Rays rather face a weak batter than a strong batter like Hamilton.

Add: Aww...someone posted it before me. :(

  4. Buck showalter, Rangers Giants 1999 i think, 2-0 rangers, bonds at the plate, walks him, 2-1, gets the final out

  5. Josh Hamilton was gifted one a few weeks ago, and Barry Bonds had one in 1998 (before, we note, he became BONDS!!! -- yes, he's always been that good. The haters hate this even more).

There were a few others back in the olde dayes, but those are the only two since WWII.

  6. Yes, the Rays did it just a few weeks ago against the Rangers.  The rays opted to intentionally walk Josh Hamilton the tying runner at bat, because they feared him hitting a Grand Slam and tying up the game.  The free walk made teh gaem 7-4 and then the rays got Marlon Bryd for the final out and preserved the win.

    Box score below.

  7. Abner Dalrymple Chicago 08-02-1881

At the time of the intentional walk, the Buffalo team was down, 5-0; they end up losing, 11-2.

    Nap Lajoie  Philadelphia 05-23-1901

In Chicago‚ the A's score 2 in the 9th to close to an 11-7 deficit with the White Stockings. Sox manager Clark Griffith relieves with the sacks filled and no outs and pays the supreme compliment to Philadelphia's Nap Lajoie-he issues him an intentional walk. Griff then gets 3 ground outs and Chicago wins.

Mel Ott New York 10-05-1929 (debatable)

Mel Ott and Chuck Klein go into today's Giant-Phils doubleheader tied at 42 home runs apiece. In the opener‚ a 5-4 Phils victory‚ Ott manages a single‚ but Klein homers off Carl Hubbell in his first at bat to take the HR lead. In game 2‚ Ott singles in his first at bat. After that‚ manager Burt Shotton orders the Phillies pitchers‚ rather than give Ott a chance to tie Klein‚ to semi-intentionally walk him 5 times.  The last (semi) intentional walk comes on a 3-2 count with the bases loaded as the Giants win‚ 12-3.

    Del Bissonette Brooklyn 05-02-1928

John McGraw pays the supreme compliment to Dodger rookie Del Bissonette by ordering him walked in the 9th inning with the bases loaded and 2 out. Giants pitcher Larry Benton had allowed 2 hits before the 9th inning and is nursing a 2-0 lead. Bissonette walks forcing home a run‚ and Harry Riconda then strikes out.

    Bill Nicholson Chicago 07-23-1944

After hitting 4 consecutive HRs in two games‚ Bill Nicholson of the Cubs is given the ultimate compliment. He comes to bat with the Cubs down 10-7 in the 8th of game 2 with the Giants and is given an intentional walk forcing in a run. The strategy backfires as the Cubs tie the score at 10-10‚ but the Giants score twice in their half of the 8th with Joe Medwick driving home the winner.

    Barry Bonds San Francisco 05-28-1998

With Arizona leading the Giants‚ 8-6‚ in the bottom of the 9th with the bases loaded‚ manager Buck Showalter orders reliever Gregg Olson to intentionally walk Barry Bonds to bring home the Giants' 7th run.

    Josh Hamilton  Texas 08-17-2008

Rays manager Joe Maddon opted to intentionally walk Josh Hamilton with the bases loaded and Tampa Bay up 7-3. That brought home a run and brought the winning run to the plate with two outs, but Dan Wheeler struck out Marlon Byrd to end the game.

  8. The Rays did it not too long ago to Josh Hamilton, and it ended up paying off.  They didn't score anymore runs that inning.

  9. I'm fairly certain that the FIRST player to be walked intentionally with the bases loaded was Mel Ott, New York Giants. It was huge new when it happened and had a lifetime positive effect on his popularity.
