My child was on an IEP and removed a year ago. The same issues he was having before are back again. Instead of putting him on another IEP, they are suggesting a 504 instead. Please tell me what the difference is. Thank you for your help.

  1. An IEp spells out specifics that must be follwoed regarding education. There are also qualifying factors such as delay that come into account. A 504 allows for modifications such as untimed tests, an aide, a reader etc without specific therapies in place. It also can set up a behavioral plan for your child.

  2. Once your child is evaluated for services they will suggest measures for your child.  If you want more information I would encourage you to look on the Massachusettes Department of Education's website.  In fact, if you go to http://www.doe.mass.edu/sped/parents.htm... and click on "A Parent's Guide to Special Education", which will provide you with some good basic information, including exactly what a 504 plan is.
