In Melbourne which are the best and cheapest suburbs to live in for families?

In Melbourne which are the best and cheapest family suburbs - rent for a 3 bed house around $250 tp $300 per week - good schools with before and after clubs/vacation clubs - for ages 9 and 11 yrs - with average commute time to CBD - no car so good transport links - I prefer places with a community feel as not a big city person

Preston/Reservoir - plenty of trams, trains and buses... I didn't have a car the entire time I lived in the area and had no problems! Preston Market (community). Very multicultural. Northland Shopping Centre not too far away. Plenty of schools, parkland (Bundoora Park), Universities close by. I may be biased as I lived in that area for 9 years. Not too sure on the rental prices though.

Only likely to find rents like that in the western suburbs, Footscray and further out.  Maybe Mooney Ponds.  Usual small house goes for about 2,000 to 3,000 a month, unfurnished, utilities extra.  Nothing cheap. Good transport everywhere.  Good wishes.

Outer suburbs with rental prices like that.

Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Wyndhamvale, Point Cook. All are outer western suburbs where you can get a reasonable sized house for the $$ & has all the other facilities you are wanting.

Well  good luck because finding rent anywhere is hard.You need to check the papers and maybe go online.

That price range ~ probably Western suburbs ~ outer CBD. Research the area though online before final decision.

Rentals here at present can be quite difficult to find though.

Best thing probably look up online Melbourne real estate agents/newspapers.

We've just moved into SE, around Pakenham which has huge development going on with masses of rentals. Get 3BR house for $260-$300 a week easily. Great local schools, shops, close to train straight into city. Look under realestate.com.au. Good luck!
