I always assumed it was pronounced like the act of reading the lines in a book, but I just bought a computer game which speaks, and the computer pronouces it like "Redding". Does anyone know which is correct? Was this named after somebody and his pronounciation was different? Does anyone know the history behind this? Thanks in advance!

  1. I pronounced it 'reeding' all my life.

Then I found out it is based on Atlantic City and the Reading Railroad which actually exists! and it is pronounced 'redding'

Much as I am comfortabe with 'reeding', 'redding' is correct.

  2. It is pronounced "redding" which is the same way you would pronounce the city in Pennsylvania.

  3. It's a British place and is pronounced 'Redding' (as in the colour red).

  4. redding  like in red

  5. I've heard it being pronouced both ways. I say Reading, like what you do in a book.

  6. Computer's correct 'Redding'. It is a British railway station on the formerly Great Western Region in Berkshire (Barkshire)England.
