In Muslim culture, why do women wear burkas?

nope that isn't true

first of all iam muslim girl i wear hijab and not the face veiled one and in my country egypt if u are intrested most girls wear hijab not the face veiled one and other wear niqab or some call burka and others arenot wearing it yet...

there is a great wisdom of veil in islam not looking as degrading but rather helps to presetve modestly in actions and everything and helps them to be more pious more over not showing ur beauty like ur hair and body ..etc attracts men which will also leads to some social problems as well...

so from all sides we can see the hijab is great...

Someone asked almost this same question yesterday in this section. I'm sure you can find it if you go back a few pages. But, I'm not quite sure about burkas specifically but I know that in the Qu'ran it requires Muslims to wear modest dress. For men this is covering every part from the naval to the knees and for women this is usually covering the body. It sort of makes sense when considering that the males have one area of their body that would be considered private but the women have two.

There's a lot of arguing now though about exactly what the Qu'ran means when it speaks of dressing modestly and I know that all Muslim women don't wear burkas.

You may want to consult someone who's actually been to/traveled through out the middle east though.

It is a respect to Allah. Woman's beauty is hidden from attraction of other men, only her husband is able to c (apart from close family)...n it is beautiful and fahionable. I'm not wearing it but soon..the time will come soon InshaAllah.

because they belive a womans beuaty is for her husband only

that and even the bible talks about if you cause anther to sin (wearing s**y clthing like a tramp---> men think of s*x) you are just as guilty... this is kinda what was going through the muslims heads when htey make the laws
