Is he required to catch the ball or can it hit the ground without being muffed? If it hits the ground WITH NO ONE TOUCHING IT is it fair ball?

  1. On a kick off it is a LIVE ball after 10 yards, so it has to be catched. On a punt it does not, but cant be muffed

  2. Anyone on the receiving team can signal a fair catch.  That then places several restrictions on the team and players.

    1) If the receiving team recovers or catches the ball, it's dead at that spot no matter who has it.

    2) The player who signaled cannot be blocked until the ball touches the ground.

    3) If the player who signaled for the fair catch muffs the ball in the air, he must still be given a chance to catch the ball if he can reasonably get to it.

    4) The player who signaled cannot block anyone until after the kick ends.

The kicking team can still recover the ball and retain possession if they catch or recover it anywhere past 10 yards from where they kicked it or after it touched a receiver, of course given the above restrictions.

  3. Yea the guy is requiered to catch the ball becuz if he doesnt the other team will likely get the ball back so my answer to ur question is yes
