In New Jersey, is there a law that prevent the landlord from residing in the apartment they lease?

My landlord is currently living in the place that I had rented out from them for three weeks since they want to enjoy their shore house. I heard from other people that this is illegal in the state of NJ. It is a big inconvenience for me since I have to move out for three weeks and then I'll be able to move back in. I did this as a favor to them since the apt really is a good deal and very nice inside. Any insights are appreciated.

  1. If you willingly vacated so they could spend a few weeks at the beach, it's not illegal!

  2. Is that in your lease?  Where are you supposed to go for 3 weeks?  To his house?  I guess it didn't seem like a big deal at the time, and now you realize it's a big pain.  Call the mayor's office and ask for the phone number of the department that handles landlord/tenant issues.  Keep in mind that if you make any waves, he may not be willing to renew your lease when it expires.

  3. Ralphy R, I moved from New Jersey to Delaware last year, so I'm not sure who I could call to assist you. Here is a resource of apartments in New Jersey that you can contact. http://www.findanapartmentonline.com/New... Hopefully someone can help you.
