I've heard the African Americans are in the majority. Is this true or just a prejudice.

  1. African Americans are the majority with Hispanics coming in second.

  2. True.

Approximately 46 percent of all prison inmates (excluding those whose race was not reported) were black; 36 percent, white; 16 percent, Hispanic; 1 percent, American Indian or Alaska Native; and 1 percent, Asian or Pacific Islander

That is from the ACA website. I think those were the numbers from 2001-02.The numbers have probably changed since then.

I am going to try to find a more recent one....

Well I can't find more recent numbers which sux.

  3. In the U.S. it's true.  Blacks make up 41% of the prison population.  Whites make up 35% of the population.

It's interesting to note that in 2006: 70.1% of all arrested adults were white, 27.6% were black.  60.8% of adults arrested for violent crimes were white, 30.3% were black.  47.7% of adults arrested for murder were white, 50.0% were black.  69.7% of adults arrested for s*x offenses were white, 27.9% were black.

Blacks are convicted more often and serve longer sentences than whites.
