  1. Your PSU and boards should work fine together.

I can't recall the exact functions off the top of my head. The additional 4 pins are for performance monitoring of the the PSU iitslef. Older motherboards may only have 20 pin connectors as these functions are relatively new. If you had a 24 pin connector on your PSU you would not be able to fit it on a 20 pin mother board. A 20+4 means that the connector is 2 pieces and can therefore fit both 20 and 24 pin boards.

  2. You can get an adaptor or convert the PSU, however, if you installing a new motherboard get a new PSU as you may need a more powerful supply and they are very cheap http://www.trilogicuk.co.uk

  3. As far as i'm aware they are, but you need a adapter.

The +4 is for the power supply for the CPU, which should also be needed on the 24 pin mobo.

The +4 connector is a 4pin square, if you have one of these on your mobo next to the cpu, then you need a 20 to 24 pin adapter.

  4. this is interesting site...and answers your problem... yes is the answer,

  5. 20+4 is universal, the 4 pin disconnects so you can hook it up to a 20 pin board, the 24 pin will not work on a 20 pin board as you can't part the 4 pin from it.

    In short yes.
