like on TV, if a player drops out in 5th place, and another at 4th, and another at 3rd, and another in 2nd, and another in 1st, do the 5th, 4th, 3rd, and 2nd player get any money? or do they go home with nothing, and winner gets it all??

Because i see shows like World Poker Tour, and at the end it shows players that came in 5th, 4th, 3rd, etc. and an amount of money under their rank they finished in, do they go home with that money???

am i making any sense? its 2:14 am......

  1. In some large tournaments i.e. Aussie Millions, World Series, something like the top 2,000 get paid, as you get higher the prize money gets much larger.

I think what you might be thinking of is the chip stack, it can often be confusing. On big televised tournaments they tend to show the chip stack more than the prize money, so I'm guessing that's where you got confused.

  2. no your not making ant sence,,,,why would somebody ''drop out,'' after theyve made the final table?

  3. It depends on the tournament.  A typical high stakes ($10,000 buy in or more) tournament, of the kind you see on TV (WPT, WSOP, etc), will pay approximately the top 10% of the field.

So if 1,000 enter, the top 100 usually get something.  But the prizes are usually very top heavy.  If you finish in 99th place, you can maybe expect to get back double your entry fee.  But if you win, you are going to make a fortune.  Usually double what second place would pay.

So when you see the WPT on TV, they usually tell you what the winners will win.  And it might be say $100K for sixth place, but $500K for the winner.

At the end of the day each tournament is different.  The exact prizes and distribution of prizes will vary from one tournament to another, and is a function of the cost of the buy in, and the way that tournament is run.

There is a temptation for tournament directors to give the lions share of the winnings to first place, because it sounds a lot more exciting to hear that someone has won a million dollars, rather than ten people winning $100K.

  4. yeah, they get that amount of money from the prize pool.
