Question:

In Regency times, would a butler introduce two guests?

For example, if a young woman (unchaperoned) was in a sitting room waiting for the host, and another guest arrived, say an earl, would the butler make introductions? Or would the earl introduce himself? And, if so, how would he introduce himself? Where can I get answers to these types of questions. Doing research for a Regency Romance I'm writing. Thanks!

    Good luck!

  2. Firstly, a young lady of quality would not visit anywhere without at least her maid to chaperone her - unless it were a requirement of the regency romance to set the scene!

It would not be the butler's place to make introductions.  He would merely announce the new arrival, and show them into the Morning Room if that is the time of day.  It is not his place to introduce people of rank higher than his own, or at any time.

I think that, in the situation you describe, the people would know each other anyway, at least by name.  And the Earl, being a gentleman, wouldn't take advantage of a single young woman by addressing her at all.

Sorry, but I think the situation wouldn't arise.  You seem to have some wonderful ideas for romance; don't ruin it by getting the facts wrong.
