  1. In the first scene of the play, Abram, a Montague servant asks, "Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?"  Sampson, a Capulet servant replies, "No, sir, I do not bite my thumb at you, sir, but I bite my thumb, sir."

    For the entire exchange between the rival servants, read the first 50 or 60 lines of Act 1, Scene 1.


  2. In the play "Romeo and Juliet", a battle breaks out in the first scene between Gregory and Sampson (Capulets) and Abram and Balthasar(Montague). What provoked this battle is when Sampson bites his thumb at Abram and Balthasar. Back in medieval times, biting your thumb at someone was like flipping somebody off.

    So it was abraham.
