  1. No, rugby is not very much like American Football at all. However, it needs to be said that I base my knowledge on information given by American friends who have played both codes. They play with a similar shaped ball and that is where the likeness ends so I’m told.

I sorry Lynn S if it is the scrum that this question is about then I think your understanding of the game is limited.

There are fifteen men in a rugby team their positions are as follows:

Forwards: Loosehead prop 1, Hooker 2, Tighthead prop 3, Lock 4, Lock 5, Blindside flanker 6, Openside flanker 7 and the Number 8.

Backs: Half back 9, First Five eight 10, Second Five eight 12, Wing three quarters 13, Right wing 14 and Left wing 11.

The scrum consists of two team's eight forwards, with each team binding in three rows The front row consist of the loosehead prop the hooker whose job it is to win the ball, and the tighthead prop. The second row consists of the two locks and finally the third row is made with two flankers and the number eight. A scrum can be awarded for a number of infringements one being a forward pass.

Before the scum is set you will clearly hear the referee call – crouch, touch, engage. There have been many very serious injuries to players in the setting of a scum and although this may sound like a stupid call it gives players the opportunity to make sure they are setting the scum in a safe way. Once the scum is set the half back of the team awarded the scrum places the ball in the tunnel formed by the locking of the front rows. It is extremely important that the forwards in the scrum protect the ball for their backs. When the ball is won usually by the team awarded the scrum, (if the other team wins the scrum it is called a tighthead), it is generally given to the half back who distributes it to the backline so they can run the ball. The aim being to score tries.

However, a big forward pack (eight players), that dominates play, slows the game down and the spectacle of rugby becomes boring much like Lynn S described, and the backs become redundant.

This is the type of rugby played by the English team at the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Yes it does win games. However, most of the best rugby playing nations in the world, over the last 30 years have concentrated on developing a 15 man game. Forwards are very important in a game of rugby but are not the only players will skill on the field.

  2. Its to drive he ball forward towards the goal so that they can score.  They are not allowd to pass the ball forward, they have to throw the ball back then run forward, but then may get stopped by the defence (the opposition!).  So they get into a scrum (which is what your talking about I take it when they charge at each other) and the ball stays inbetween their feet!   The further they charge forward with it remaining there, the better chance they have of either kicking it over the goal posts, or scoring a try (where they run with the ball and land ontop of it on the ground!)

    Hope that helps!!

  3. If they charged away from each other, they would need a bigger pitch.
