  1. KTDykes is right. There are only six cities in Scotland. Edinburgh (the capital), Glasgow (the largest city), Aberdeen, Dundee, Stirling and Inverness.


  2. A city has either a cathedral or a Royal Charter declaring it to be a city.  A town can be larger or smaller than a city, but it doesn't have a cathedral or a Royal Charter.  A village is generally smaller than a town and a hamlet is generally smaller still.  Apart from in the case of a city there aren't any particular credentials.

  3. "qualify", not "qualifies" - "criteria" is plural
