Does anyone in New England have any advise or experience growing cool weather veggies in the Fall? Do I start from seed now? Nurseries in my area do not sell started veggies in the Fall?

  1. Now is a good time to start. I wouldn`t wait much longer. All "Brassicas" are cool weather crops. These include cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, etc.  Carrots can also be planted now.  Also, fall is a great time for 'greens'. (Turnip, mustard, collard, etc.). Lettuce, too.

Check this site for other info.

Also, just google "fall garden planting" for a lot more info.

Tip: When I first started gardening (many years ago), I found seed catalogs were an excellent source of info. on what to plant, when, and what varieties. Just google "seed catalogs" and order all you want. They are free, and also show pictures of plants you might be interested in (especially the ones you`ve never grown).

  2. South West, nice, I was bred in Somerset. Say in your area the first TELLING frost will be at the back end of October, normally. if you sow now that leaves some 12 weeks, loads of time for  lettuce, try Little Gem, carrots, radishes and beetroots, which will stand frost along with the carrots. there are others but this is what I grow and know. Now, moving on to sprouts, broccoli, cauli's, chard and winter celery. For these you may struggle from seeds, pity about the local garden centre, but you can obtain these plants from eBay. Can't vouch for their quality, but as long as they have their first true leaves it will save you a couple of weeks.. Keep the soil moist at all times. Happy and healthy eating, nothing like it straight from the soil. I tell 'e.

Oh, I nearly forgot, don't forget to feed them once they've started to grow.

  3. Yep, I'd go with cabbages.  Buy your seeds in the spring and use some for the fall crop.  When stored in a dry, cool place seeds can last several years.
